In 2019, when I found myself battling depression and anxiety, a photographic essay on steeples became a form of recreation. I was stressed by overworking and family problems that were beyond my control.
When I finally began therapy, my counselor encouraged me to increase my self-care. I was pouring myself out into my family, friends, and work, but failed to replenish myself with my own passion: photography and videography.
In September of 2019, I captured the first image of the series. That first image was mesmerizing and piqued my interest in the history and symbolism of steeples. I have traveled across Michigan to photograph steeples in calm blue skies, misty fog, and captivating sunrises and sunsets. It is my goal in life to inspire others like the SPIRE, to be a beacon of light like the LANTERN, to serve and protect like the WATCHTOWER, and to encourage others like the BELFRY. When I feel broken, Christ who holds me together and artistic expressions like SteepleChase is my opportunity to participate in self-care while sharing tranquility with a broken and hurting world.
This exhibit was planned to debut in the fall of 2020 at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI. COVID changed those plans. Stay tuned for the unveiling in the near future. All photographs in SteepleChase are available for purchase. Please send a message for pricing and print options.
Disclaimer. This exhibit does not endorse or promote the views, practices, and/or beliefs of any of the photographed churches. Photographs may not be used without my written permission.
SPIRE is the apex reaching toward heaven, pointing toward righteousness. Many spires will only point, others will display compasses for direction, but others will boldly proclaim the cross of Jesus Christ. How do you inSPIRE others?
LANTERN, for some communities it is the only ray of hope. This beacon of light shines bright for all to see. Good deeds and moral excellence is what the world craves, so let your light shine intensely for all to see!
BELFRY, is a tower where church bells are housed. It often offers a melodious reminder of God's presence. An encouragement to the soul and a call to worship. Are we clanging cymbals in the ears of others or are we a harmony for hurting hearts?
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love
WATCHTOWER, Staying ready and standing guard for yourself and others. It is a place where vigilance is critical for survival. Jesus asked his friends on the night of his betrayal to watch and pray. Why? So they would not fall to temptations. We need others around us to pray for us and watch with us. Accountability is essential.
