In 2019, I was overwhelmed with work, family, and life in general. Many things were out of my control and as a result, I found myself battling depression and anxiety. I poured myself into family, friends, and work but failed to replenish myself with any of my passions.
Following my family's annual photoshoot one fall evening, I noticed the sun setting on a spire. I grabbed my camera, took one shot, threw the camera in the bag, loaded up my family in our van, and headed home. The next day when I began processing the images, I couldn’t believe how peaceful, artistic and soothing it was to look upon the image of the steeple.
One day, my VA counselor encouraged me to increase my self-care and focus on my passions. The one craft I've always enjoyed is photography, so I decided to direct my attention there. I couldn't stop reflecting on the steeple that I recently took while out with my family.
Simultaneously, I was looking forward to ArtPrize 2020 and feeling very excited about the idea of one day entering my photography in this prestigious art competition.
SteepleChase was born! My photographic essay on steeples became my primary self-care activity. I began thinking of the history, symbolism, and meaning of steeples. Steeples are landmarks built by religious leaders who wanted to declare a message to their surrounding neighborhoods. Many of these costly ornaments are works of art, but they can and should be so much more.
In a world where there is so much hurt, people can be like steeples with charitable deeds, generosity, and compassion. My goal in life is to inspire others like the spire; be a beacon of light like the lantern; serve and protect like the watchtower, and encourage others like the belfry.
SteepleChase is my opportunity to travel the state with my family while engaging in recreation and sharing tranquil images of beautiful Michigan landmarks.
Thank you so much for your support and love!

SPIRE is the apex reaching toward heaven, pointing toward righteousness. Many spires will only point, others will display compasses for direction, but others will boldly proclaim the cross of Jesus Christ. How do you inSPIRE others?
LANTERN, for some communities, is the only ray of hope. This beacon of light shines bright for all to see. Good deeds and moral excellence are what the world craves, so let your light shine intensely for all to see!
BELFRY is a tower where church bells are housed. It often offers a melodious reminder of God's presence. An encouragement to the soul and a call to worship. Are we clanging cymbals in the ears of others, or are we a harmony for hurting hearts?
WATCHTOWER Staying ready and standing guard for yourself and others. It is a place where vigilance is critical for survival. Jesus asked his friends on the night of his betrayal to watch and pray. Why? So they would not fall to temptations. We need others around us to pray for us and watch with us. Accountability is essential.
